How to Find Derm Locums Opportunities
Finding locums work in dermatology takes effort but is overall fairly straightforward. Here are the three ways to find your next gig:
1. Networking
Coresidents and Friends: Let your circle know you’re looking. Groups often have internal needs for maternity leave, retirement, or unexpected turnover that they haven’t posted publicly yet.
State Societies: You could attend your state’s dermatology society meetings to meet practice owners that could be looking to fill a need.
Facebook Groups: Connect with other BCDs on groups like "The Board Certified Dermatologists" (TBCD) and TBCD Career Center.
If you make your own post, clearly state which states you’re licensed in and whether you’re willing to obtain new licenses for the right contract.
2. Locums Agencies
If you want someone else to handle the travel logistics, state licensing, credentialing, malpractice and other paperwork, go with an agency.
Companies like Weatherby Healthcare, CompHealth, and LocumTenens.com often post derm locums opportunities.
Remember that they take a significant cut of the hourly rate. And don’t forget that everything is negotiable.
3. Cold Calling
If you have a specific city or state in mind where you want to work, don't wait for a job posting.
Look up private practices in your desired zip code. Call and ask to speak with the practice manager or practice owner
Have a brief pitch ready to convey that tells them who you are, what you’re looking for, and why you’re looking at their practice
I found my gigs from a combination of cold calling and networking. Make sure you plan well in advance to allow yourself to explore your options thoroughly.
